SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Good Things Utah)- January is human trafficking awareness month, a time to shine light and raise awareness about the efforts being made to fight it. Director of operations in Africa, Patrick Odle from the Children’s International Rescue Foundation (CIRF), is here to discuss and tell you what you can do to help.

Human trafficking is a devastating crime that involves the exploitation of individuals for labor or sex, often under conditions of coercion or deceit. Sadly, it happens all around the world, including in our own communities. Raising awareness is crucial because trafficking can be hidden in plain sight, and people often don’t realize how close it may be to them.

“At CIRF, we’re focused on identifying victims, rescuing them from dangerous situations, and providing the aftercare they need to heal and rebuild their lives,” Patrick Odle said. “Every rescue operation is unique, but the goal is always the same—to bring individuals out of harm’s way and into safety. Our team works closely with local law enforcement and other organizations to identify victims and safely remove them from trafficking situations. “After a rescue,” he continued, “we offer a comprehensive support system: from medical care and psychological counseling to legal services and education. We believe in long-term care because recovery doesn’t happen overnight—it’s a process that requires patience, understanding, and support. Through our aftercare programs, we help survivors regain their independence and confidence, ensuring they have the tools they need for a brighter future.”

What can you do to get involved and support the mission of CIRF during Human Trafficking Awareness Month, and throughout the year? Educate yourselves and others about the signs of trafficking. Knowledge is powerful. Secondly, donations to CIRF directly fund our rescue operations and aftercare programs.

Every bit helps, and together, we can make a lasting difference. Visit the thecirf.org to donate and learn more about how you can get involved!
